Project #10

Anti-Surveillance Tool

10.1 Anti-Surveillance Tool View the Code

Description

In this work, I showcase the number of death from COVID-19 in 11 different countries. They are USA, China, UK, India, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Australia, and Canada. Due to the small number, it is hard to see Korea on the current scope. The size of the flag show the number of death caused by COVID-19. The higher transparency of the flag means the higher death rate this country have. Therefore, the one who has relatively solid color is the one has relatively lower death rate at this moment. The top left corner shows the current last-updated time of the data from the API and it will keep updating as long as you refresh the page. The location of each circle is roughly spread out based on the actual physical location in the real world. Due to time and size constrain, I was able to pick some countries out of 253 countries all around the world.

Design Process

I used the COVID-19 data API. Please check out the original API by clicking on it.

I locate a data based API provides an data update on the case number and death number of COVID-19 from all countries all over the world. There has already a great amount of number of tools to look up the exact number of confirmed cases, but there is not really any kind of tool directly show the death number that this pandemic has brought to this world. Therefore, I want to show the realtionship between confirmed cases and death. As a citizen and seeing people careless about this, I want to reveal the real death rate that each countries are facing to alarm people about the dangerous of COVID-19.

Reflection

In this assignment, I got to play and explore a lot of great API around the Internet, but I also realized how hard as a single person to get access to some data in my life. On the other hand, working with data and visulize them are interesting process. Sometimes, I can notice a novel relationship between the numbers and showcase to my audience. Due to time constrain, I was only able to showcase 11 countries on such a tiny canvas. If I get time in the future, I would love to showcase the data from all 253 countries in a larger space and provide a certain level of real time interaction to provide a more impressive experience for audiences.
