Project #8

Experimental Camera

8.1 Experimental Camera View the Code

Description

For this experimental Camera, it will detect the facial expression (focus on the change of mouth status) to determine which kind of mask emoji will be placed on the face.
This camera is mimicing our facial expression and bring it into a next level. The smile emoji is like a mask that we keep bring with us all day. Sometimes. we open our mouth and feel surprsied but we tend to control the facial expression. On the other end, we may lose the control at certain moment and feeling OMG. This camera is mimicing how we are actually bring a facial expression mask with all of us all day and night. In this camera we only have tree emojis to express feeling which is really similar to how we tend to act and perform our emotion if we are currently in an environment that dose not comfortable to fully express ourselves.

Design Process

8.2 Brainstorm Sketch

I brainstormed and sketched three different types of camera. From left to right, the first one is the emoji mask one which aimed to bring a mask on our actual facial expression which aim to mimic how we are majorly acting our emotion and expresion for most of time. The second camera will resizing our eyes and mouth into a different size which emphasize those emotional expression by enlarging those regular size places into an unbelievable scale. The last one will put up different size of cross on each pixel based on the darkness of that certain pixel. It will depict a human shape with full of cross. For this last one, I consider it more like a personal portrait which express how I kept denying my own decision, wishes, thiniking process, and even myself at most of working process. I think it is a way to share how I struggling and sometimes may also strugging of this self-deny and uncertain through this experimental camera.

At the end, I choose the first one (emoji mask) and implement on P5.js. I think this one perfectly portrait my life in some certain level. In real life, I have to mask my feeling and expression in ordeer to fit into a general and larger group, and this type of performance start going in some unconcious way and I would love to remind audiences that this type of masking emotion and be precious on those who truly express their true feeling and thoughts.

Reflection

For this assignment, I experienced the facial recognition library in P5.js. I think it is a really useful and interesting tools to enrich the coding experience. I think I maybe able to implement this function for my Major Studio 1 final project which is majorly discuss and work on humen emotional connection and communication.
